Miley Cyrus donned a pair of Saint Laurent Metallic Leather and Suede Striped Sandals to the Maxim Hot 100 party in LA. The shoes are of course, totally gorgeous, and her black-and-white Valentino jumpsuit is obviously tres chic, but try not to look directly at her busted bright red pedicure. You may have heard by now that Miley actually topped the Maxim Hot 100 List this year, which is a tad surprising to me, because I think of Maxim readers as more of the Kate Upton-loving set. Here’s Ke$ha (I know, I can’t believe it either, but more on that later) leaving a taping of Jimmy Kimmel Live in Hollywood while wearing Saint Laurent Tribute Two Pumps. I genuinely like everything she’s wearing here, which is a far cry from my standard reaction to her usual outfits, which is simply “OH, Ke$ha!” This is an adult Ke$ha look I can whole-heartedly endorse.

Last week, we discussed the first shoes that Saint Laurent has released to retail under the guidance of new creative director Hedi Slimane. Slimane seemed intent on rebuilding the brand’s aesthetic from the ground up, and naturally, that meant assembling a strong stable of basics to establish the lines and proportions with which the brand would work to create more adventurous and exciting footwear. This week, some of that footwear is starting to surface. The first piece of the puzzle is the Saint Laurent Suede and Leather Striped Sandal.

The black-and-gold color scheme fits with the dark 70s boho-glam look of Slimane’s Spring 2013 runway show, and it fits with what we know about his love for black in general. (In that regard, he and I are definitely on the same page.) The shoe is fairly modern and would definitely make an impact on the foot (especially over a pair of black tights), but I can’t help but wish the platform had been eliminated in favor of a single-sole look. It’s far more au courant, not to mention that Slimane’s predecessor, Stefano Pilati, was known for bringing platforms to the house. What Slimane did get right, though is the wide-banded ankle strap – that’s a huge trend for spring. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $1,195.

We recently discussed how Hedi Slimane’s arrival at Saint Laurent has changed the brand’s popular existing shoes, but now the other shoe has dropped, both literally and figuratively. Slimane’s first original women’s shoe collection for Saint Laurent has begun to arrive at Barneys, and he’s setting the aesthetic tone for his reign with a tightly edited group of pumps, ankle boots and flats.

These shoes are the workhorses of the line, and they differ from the YSL shoes of Stefano Pilati’s reign in several important ways. First and foremost, they noticeably lack a platform; Pilati’s shoes, on the other hand, ushered in the era of the five-and-a-half-inch heel. They’re also considerably sleeker, with pointed toes and limited adornment, as seems to be Slimane’s immediate plan for his accessories. Ever since Hedi Slimane was named the creative director at Yves Saint Laurent (now infamously known as Saint Laurent Paris, under Hedi’s demands), I’ve been waiting with bated breath to see what would happen to YSL’s most notorious money-makers. We’ve seen the other shoe drop on the ever-popular Cabas ChYc handbag, and now we know what Slimane might have in mind for the Saint Laurent Paris Tribute Pumps

First and foremost, this shoe used to be known as the Tribtoo, but if the nomenclature that Nordstrom is using is correct, it’s been changed to match more closely with the eternally popular sandal of the same name. From Nordstrom’s own measurements of the previous Tribtoo, it seems as though the pitch of the shoe might have been lowered ever so slightly – the platform is now 1.75 inches instead of 1.25, and the heel is now 5.25 instead of 5.5. (If Nordstrom’s internal measurements can be believed, of course. Sometimes retailers aren’t consistent.)

The most noticeable change, of course, is the cap toe. I don’t think all Tributes going forward will have that, but it’s a nice visual touch to break up the blocky platform toe of the shoe and move it toward the brand’s new aesthetic. What do you think? I’m going to sound crazy, but do the Yves Saint Laurent Snakeskin Mirror Heel Pumps look vaguely…sneaker-ish to anyone else? Obviously they’re not structured like sneakers, but the way that the mirror bits frame the toe box and the futuristic finish of the snakeskin seems like it’s meant to reference the athletic trend that’s been prevalent for a few seasons now. There are also elements of straight-up futurism; in person, the mirrored accents are likely much more noticeably mirrored than they are in these photos, and the green sole is perfect in its reptilian gleam.

I always forget that summer doesn’t officially start until June 21st. That seems late, right? In my mind, Memorial Day weekend is always the market for the change in the seasons, but in reality, you still have almost a month left of spring while you’re grilling hamburgers and saluting the troops. So, you know, two weeks left for us right now, but I’m already looking forward to the cool-off for fall.

That’s not because of the weather – New York’s warm season hasn’t really even been warm so far – but because of the fashion.
