Once and for all, I think we can finally put the sneaker wedge to bed. Every brand on Earth has done one by now, and I’m hoping that now that we’ve all got that out of our collective system, we can focus on something much cooler: regular sneakers. And while I’m always a proponent of picking up a pair of Nike Dunks instead of a pair of designer kicks, the latter has become very much a trend among the fashion set, so I’m here to talk about it. When sneaker company Superga, newly purchased by Steve Madden, announced that the Olsen Twins would be its creative directors, The Row x Superga sneakers was perhaps only a matter of time. After all, The Row doesn’t have a shoe line of its own (yet – surely there’s one coming), and the simple, traditional sneaker styles favored by Superga fit in well with how the Olsens, particularly Ashley, who prefers flat, comfortable shoes from Birkenstocks to Celine espadrilles for her everyday activities. Nothing signifies the promise and renewal of spring better than a wedding, right? The only problem, of course, is that weddings, especially of the spring variety (and especially of the outdoor spring variety), often ask us to step outside our comfort zones and don outfits that we might never wear to anything but a garden party. That doesn’t mean that sort of dressing can’t be fun, of course; it just take some of us longer to get into the swing of things than others. Read More…
Before I moved to New York City two years ago, it had never occurred to me that there would be a period of time during legitimate spring (not “spring” in early March, when it’s actually still winter but we’re all sick of admitting that to ourselves) when it wouldn’t be appropriate to wear sandals. Look back, there are really only two seasons in Atlanta (Hot and Not Hot), and by Easter, if not well before, I always found myself scurrying about in sandals. Read More…
Kourtney Kardashian was recently spotted hanging out with her adorable kids Mason and Penelope in their hometown of Calabasas, CA, and wearing a pair of extremely bold Stuart Weitzman Knee-High Gladiator Sandals. These rather epic (in every sense of the word) pieces of footwear are comparatively reasonably priced, at least when viewed in the price spectrum of “things Kardashians buy” – you can pick up a pair of your own for $398 at Nordstrom. You can say a lot about Charlotte Olympia, but you can’t say that she doesn’t take advantage of the space that’s available to her. Shoe designers have it kind of rough – they’re constrained by both the essential structure of a functional shoe and its inherently limited size, and out of those constraints have come some fantastically inventive ways to make an impact with only a little bit of leather and a lot of ingenuity. Sometimes, a Look for Less makes you wonder why you spend so much on premiere designer shoes. Other times, it’s a clear indication of exactly why we shell out what we do for the best kicks around. In the case of these Rene Caovilla and VC Signature by Vince Camuto sandals, though, the effect is somewhere in the middle. The looks are so close that the price difference is painful, but the details on the more expensive option are so exquisite! Read More…
Creating a hit shoe requires some good design, good timing and a bit of alchemy. If you miss any of those three things, sorry – better luck next time. Rarely do all three convene, but for the Charlotte Olympia Kitty Velvet Slippers, they did. The success of the design only continues to grow, and although it might seem like a novelty shoe at first blush, with a bit of examination, it’s not hard to divine exactly why these shoes keep coming back, season after season, to complete the collections of eager customers.
