I can usually figure out why a pair of shoes goes on sale – they’re too prohibitively tall, the color isn’t desirable, something about the design is wonky – but when it comes to the Rupert Sanderson Finality Cutout Pumps, I’m stumped. These shoes hit a number of important Spring 2011 trends, and get two sizes are available for 65% off retail.

The color is perfect; coral is huge for spring, as are brights in general. The shape is what’s happening right now; a platform-lacking pointy toe is where directional design is headed. The shoes even feature cutouts and laces, both of which are big generalized footwear trends that have shown a lot of consumer interest. So what gives?

As spring collections have slowly begun to populate retail websites and and glossy fashion spreads, we’ve seen plenty of bright, sunshine-y color blocking in everything from ready-to-wear to accessories to shoes. For those of us who were getting sick of seeing layered shades of camel, this trend couldn’t be a more welcome respite from neutrals run amok, but it’s always welcome to see a designer put his or her own spin on the day’s prevailing aesthetic ideas.

The Rupert Sanderson Tri-Colored Patent Pumps do that exceptionally well, taking the happy, vibrant proposition of spring color blocking to a dark and sexy place befitting such a vertiginous heel. The design also displays the colors of my alma mater, but I promise that my affection for these shoes goes beyond just that.
