Every now and then, I post a pair of shoes on here that I think might be kind of a tough sell, and the TOMS Wisett Dessert Bootie probably belongs in that category. People who read shoe blogs tend to like high heels and luxe materials and generalized fanciness, all of which are things I absolutely adore (obviously), but sometimes you just gotta have a pair of shoes to put on when you go to the bodega to buy your egg sandwich in the morning. While shoe shopping with a friend this weekend (she got these, they are major), the subject of what we’re going to do now that it’s sandal season came up. Living in New York, have a couple trusty pairs of flat sandals for spring and summer is non-negotiable; it’s hot outside, you’re walking everywhere, but you need a little more coverage than your average pair of flip flops because New York City streets are inarguably disgusting. It’s been a week full of Kanye West here at our little family of fashion sites. We got excited over his budding relationship with Kim Kardashian over at BagThatStyle, we dissected his bag collection in relation to Kim’s at PurseBlog and now, it’s time to talk about those $6,000 shoes that he designed with Giuseppe Zanotti for his debut collection and which he name-checked in his new song “Theraflu.” Could there be a better pair for this week’s Fill in the Blank? If you’ve noticed, we’ve had a running theme on TalkShoes over the past couple of days: Versace and what is simultaneously so wrong and so right about its shoes. The brand’s love for lucite in particular tends to be a sticking point for some people, but really, there’s nothing inherently tacky about the material. In fact, I think it gets an entirely undeserved bad reputation when it comes to lucite as a shoe design element. Read More…

How convenient that I was talking about Versace’s shoes and their tendency to look like the footgear preferred by, err, pole technicians just yesterday. The Versace Studded Suede and Mesh Platforms landed at Net-a-Porter shortly thereafter, and they are exactly what I was talking about. The universe couldn’t have provided me with a better example. For the uninitiated, Versus is to Versace as Miu Miu is to Prada, more or less. It’s a “diffusion” line that’s really not any more affordable or mainstream, but it allows the parent company to diversify a little bit and reach more people with more products than it would with a single brand. The big different between Versus and Miu Miu, though, is that Miu Miu is still run by Miuccia Prada, the same woman who oversees Prada. Read More…

I was fine with the Isabel Marant Sneaker Wedges. They’re not something that I plan to wear, but the wedge was pretty low (and therefore less offensive when inserted into an athletic shoe), and I’ve seen them look fantastic on people in exactly the same casual French way that characterizes all of Marant’s best work. It’s a shoe interesting enough that I can see outside of my own personal style to understand why people like it. Read More…

If you’ve been looking for a pair of Yves Saint Laurent Cardinal Loafers, you might want to scoot over to Net-a-Porter – quickly. These Spring 2012 runway shoes have been selling out left and right, but Net-a-Porter still has about half the sizes left in this much sought-after design. Get your credit card ready, though – these shoes, also called the Yves Saint Laurent Cardilam Loafer Pumps, ring in at a very pricey $1695. Read More…
