I know that some people hate jelly shoes, but I’ve always thought they had their place. While I wouldn’t suggest wearing a pair to the office (unless you work at a swim-up desk, and if you do, are you hiring?), a cute pair of jellies at a cookout or beach party is a totally reasonable alternative to a pair of leather shoes that might get ruined or canvas shoes that might get soggy. Because of her pregnancy, Alexander McQueen’s Sarah Burton was supposed to take something of a break this season; instead of a full show, it would be a tightly edited set of 10 looks. As it turned out, though, Burton squeezed a season (or more) worth of detail and perfection into those ten looks, giving her appreciative audience pearl-encrusted pieces that would look proper only on long-dead European royalty and that would have perhaps felt more at home during Paris Couture Week instead of at a ready-to-wear show. You know how sometimes, when you smell something horrible, your first impulse is to make whoever is closest to you smell it as well? That was similar to the compulsion that I had when I first laid eyes on the Stella McCartney Perforated PVC Lucite Flatform Sandals – they’re so odious that I simply couldn’t keep them to myself, I had to force them on you as well. Summer can be hard on feet, especially if you live in a city. It’s exciting to wear sandals, but after a couple weeks, your feet look worse for the wear – things stay much prettier when your toes aren’t exposed to the elements, whether you’re dealing with sand or concrete. (And trust me, it’s much worse when it’s concrete, which it is for a lot of us.) Sometimes, even during warm months, your feet need a break behind a layer of fabric. Read More…
For being part of an overall collection that had so much going on, the shoes from Givenchy Fall 2013 were remarkably consistent throughout the collection, and perhaps more notably, they were wearable. Sure, striated, multicolored snakeskin mid-calf boots may not be the simplest thing to work into one’s wardrobe, but they’re likely light-years more functional for the average luxury shoe shopper than the fascinating-if-weird sandals from Spring 2013. If you’ve seen any of the (many) Instagram’d images from the Charlotte Olympia Fall 2013 shoe presentation, you probably had some kind of idea in mind of what was going to come next. After all, designer Charlotte Dellal isn’t one to play coy with her inspirations and ideas, and a giant Rapunzel braid snaking down a hotel’s grand staircase would let even the densest among us know that we’re in for a fairy tale in shoe form. With single-sole pumps the chicest thing going in the heel world at the moment, it seems that flats have gotten a bit of a stylistic cleanup of their own. Of course, flats suffer from a few design challenges: they provide little surface area for a designer to work with, people expect them to be comfortable to an extent that they don’t expect of other types of shoes and the angle at which a foot interacts with the back of a flat can often be more blister-inducing than even the worst heels.
