He doesn’t want to start new trends or flirt with the avant-garde; he just wants to make beautiful things that women love to wear. For Spring 2011 (and, let’s face it, every season before), I think that it’s safe to say that he accomplished his mission with considerable aplomb.

These aren’t shoes for downtown girls or Williamsburg hipsters. They’re for grown women, people whose spots in life are already secure and who want to look polished, ladylike and luxurious. Some of the show’s shoes were obscured by de la Renta’s signature ball gowns, but the ones the audience could see were beautiful in the most direct and traditional sense of the word.
