Honestly, I don’t think anyone can make a simple pair of jeans and a basic tee look as classy as Miranda Kerr. But should I start combing the sale racks for velvet smoking slippers, or will the smoking slipper trend be totally smoked by next fall?

Looking back, the 90s feel like a simpler time. Celebrities had body fat and lacked hair extensions, grunge was fashionable and no one expected anybody to teeter around in five-inch stilettos. All of that stuff has changed considerably in the last 20 years, but if you’re feeling particularly nostalgic, fashion is starting to come back around to the conventions of the day. (Just ask Hedi Slimane.) If you’d like to get started on your 90s look for summer, well, look no further than Miu Miu.

Miu Miu has been playing with chunky heel and sole shapes for a few seasons now, so perhaps these shoes were an inevitable eventuality. These sandals make it look like there’s perhaps some kind of Clueless remake going on that Miuccia Prada’s doing the costumes for, and a few of the footwear designs made it to the mass market. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, though – Clueless is a great encapsulation of a very particular fashion moment, beyond just being a hilarious teen-movie classic, and sometimes a throwback is fun. These shoes remind me a lot of the shoe shapes I loved when I was first becoming aware of things like fancy shoes, and for that, they’ll always give me a bit of nostalgia. Not enough to buy them, of course, but looking is free.

Love them or hate them, Miu Miu never fails to produce a set of runway shoes worth a closer look. The brand has given us everything from drool-worthy glitter booties to incredibly odd, flower-appliqued, open-toed cowboy boots, and it seems as though Miuccia Prada didn’t take the season off from designing divisive footwear. Above all, though, the shoes of Miu Miu Fall 2013 are built for off-road wear. Wherever you can go off-road in a pair of high heels, anyway.

I can already envision a pair of these chunky-soled pumps or booties in a close-up editorial shot, mired in mud, perhaps alongside a pair of Stella McCartney mules with a similarly chunky rubber sole. If you like the quirky (it’s Miu Miu, after all) uppers but don’t care for the thick soles, there are some more conventional pairs mixed in that might whet your shoe appetite. Overall, it’s a collection about which Miu Miu fans are likely to be excited.

It never ceases to amaze me how, when a shoe is very carefully designed, it can so clearly evoke a particular theme or mood or person with only a few details. Usually when that happens, it’s a shoe that makes me think of a city – Miami and Las Vegas, for example, have very distinct footwear personalities, and the sight of a shoe that would fit in perfectly in one of those locales can transport me there almost immediately. Upon seeing the Miu Miu Pointed Toe Jewel Pumps and Slingbacks, though, I was transported somewhere else – straight to a castle.

When I evaluate a shoe, I always try and imagine who would wear it, and these shoes belong on the feet of a princess. They’re perfect ladylike and traditional, with just that little touch of glitz to take things to a royal place. The shape of the heel and body of the shoe are also highly retro, and they call back to a time where there were far more princesses than there are today. In the modern era, these shoes should be a lot of fun to style – may I suggest some velvet and brocade?

Normally, I don’t wear sneakers. Actually, I don’t think I’ve worn sneakers since high school when I had a Converse obsession and I had a pair for every outfit and for every occasion (or at least that’s what it seemed like). Then I started college, and needless to say, I haven’t worn sneakers since. (Well, except when I go for my occasional run, but the key word is “occasional”). However, these Miu Miu Studded Glitter Finish Leather Sneakers speak to my fashion senses. There’s just something about these shoes that gets me all jittery inside.

I suppose my love for Converse may be at the root of my love for this design; these Converse look-alikes have a bit of a more glamourous appeal, but the resemblance is there. The glitter-on-leather finish not only works as a shoe to wear out on casual days, but better yet, it’s also great for nights out. For instance, how it is shown in Net-a-Porter’s modeling shot is a perfect example of pairing a a great pair of jeans, a tee, and a leather jacket with these shimmery shoes, and better yet, you will be the only one in your group of friends not complaining about pained feet. Miu Miu allows wearers to have their cake and eat it too by jumping aboard the cap toe trend, this time with a studded cap. Whoever said comfort couldn’t be stylish underestimated the creations of the one and only Miu Miu. Buy a pair through the one and only Net-A-Porter for $495.

Even though Miu Miu’s Fall 2012 runway shoes have seriously grown on me since debuting on the runway back in February, they’re still the kind of shoes that are going to be a hard sell to a wide retail audience. Miu Miu’s business is predicated on heavy shoe and accessory sale volume (as is nearly every fashion brand’s), so that means adapting a difficult look in a wearable way is essential, even for someone who embraces weirdness as much as Miuccia Prada does. She is, after all, a business woman.

That brings us to the Miu Miu Suede Platform Sandals come in.

Like the brand’s bold runway shoes, this design has a Fluevogian, statement-making flared heel that’s more thick than Miu Miu’s usual structure. The purple and black color scheme references Prada’s Fall 2012 collection more than Miu Miu’s, but since they ultimately come out of one mind, that’s not so surprising. Personally, I love this color combination; purple is so rich and regal, and that fact is only magnified when the color is applied to suede. The black accents help ground the whole thing in reality, and the twisted fron strap will look very cool once it has a foot against which to contrast. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $715.
