I can think of no more precarious shoe material that white suede or nubuck. The soft, napped finish of both materials is notorious for its easy ruination at the hands of dirt, grime and moisture, and making either material stark white feels like tempting fate in the worst way. And still, I find myself overwhelmingly attracted to the Giuseppe Zanotti Tapered Toe Pumps.

In this case, I think that the white color is key to the minimal, sleek effect of the design. This shoe’s lines are back-breakingly precise, and a similarly stark color choice helps to highlight the care that went into crafting this prototypical pump. But still, white nubuck? I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with that.

Giuseppe Zanotti Patent T Strap Peep Toes Giuseppe Zanotti ameliorates a multitude of sins with a simple, retro peep toe

My opinion of Giuseppe Zanotti vacillates wildly. Last week, his bedazzled dollar-sign sandals made me see red, but thankfully, shoes from Zanotti’s lovely Pre-Spring and Spring 2011 collections have started to make their way to the internet for pre-order, and they are a huge, beautiful step in the right direction. Can the Giuseppe Zanotti Patent T-Strap Peep Toe be the shoe world’s next YSL Tribute? It wouldn’t surprise me at all. In fact, it might surprise me more if that didn’t happen.

Don’t get me wrong – Giuseppe Zanotti loves his rhinestones and I love him for it. He has a clear point of view, he does things that many other designers in the business wouldn’t think to do, and he makes some seriously covetable sparkly footwear in the process. But. None of that excuses the Giuseppe Zanotti Dollar Sign Suede Sandal.

Whiskey. Tango. Foxtrot, y’all. At first, I didn’t even realize from BlueFly’s thumnail that the giant wad of crystals on the front of this shoe was supposed to be a dollar sign, but when I scrolled by more slowly, the aim of the design became apparent. It’s like giant hip-hop bling, except for your feet. 2007 has come back again to remind us just how tacky it was the first time around.

Recently, Giuseppe Zanotti has released some rather unfortunate shoes. Whether they were for his eponymous line or in conjunction with Balmain, I was beginning to become a little worried about footwear’s bling master and the direction of his shoe designs. I’m happy to report that upon seeing the Giuseppe Zanotti Chiffon Bow Sandal, all of my concerns have vanished.

This shoe is so unapologetically, uncompromisingly gorgeous that it has somehow convinced me that a big floppy bow is a great idea, something of which I usually cannot be convinced, no matter the context. On this design, though, the softness and femininity of said bow fit perfectly.

Zanotti 4 Fashion Week Shoes: Giuseppe Zanotti Spring 2011

When I think of Giuseppe Zanotti, I think of SPARKLES. The man’s favorite color is shiny and he’s not afraid to use it, normally to wonderful, whimsical, glamourous ends, which is why parts of the Giuseppe Zanotti Spring 2011 preview might seem a bit surprising. The trademark rhinestones are there, but so are some very different kinds of shoes.

Perhaps what sticks out most obviously from the usual Zanotti aesthetic is the pair of black leather sneakers. They are adorned with shiny studs, but compared to what the brand usually churns out, a pair of urban kicks is pretty far left of center. What’s more intriguing, however, are Zanottis flirtations with minimal lines. “Zanotti” and “minimalism” normally wouldn’t belong in the same sentence together, but the thick-heeled sandals and gladiator flats have me curious to see more from footwear’s master of bling.

Sometimes, you look at an object and you just know who should own it. Some kind of weird pop-culture synapse deep within your brain lights up, things add up perfectly, and you’re instantly overcome with the knowledge that you’re exactly right.

That just happened to me with Paris Hilton and the Giuseppe Zanotti Crystal-Embellished Suede Boots. I wish my epiphany had been about something more highbrow and intellectual, but I guess they can’t all be thoughts about Baudrillard and the nature of reality. For the moment, I’m quite content in my conclusion about these shoes and the person who must own them. I’ll work on having important thoughts later.

Giuseppe Zanotti swears that the Giuseppe Zanotti Wedge Pumps only have an six-inch heel, and I just don’t see how that’s possible unless they’re playing a very sneaky optical illusion on me. The wedge looks so tall, in fact, that I could think of only one person when I saw them: Rachel Zoe.

Fans of her Bravo show will know exactly what I’m talking about – Rachel claims to not own flats, and the taller the heels, the more she likes them. The really tall ones are referred to as her “tranny shoes,” and sometimes her “major tranny shoes,” although I’m not sure at exactly what heel height that distinction is made. If I had to bet, though, I’d say that these are definitely “major.”

Giuseppe Zanotti Crystal Bow Pumps Giuseppe Zanotti likes the view from behind

More and more, I find myself becoming bored for with embellishment on the vamp of a shoe. Crystals, bows, rhinestones, ruffles, flowers…I feel like I’ve seen it all when it comes to toe adornment. Who knew that a simple change of location could perk me right up?

Well, apparently Guiseppe Zanotti did. Back-of-shoe embellishment has become increasingly popular in the past few years, and I think that the Giuseppe Zanotti Crystal Bow Pumps make two somewhat tired motifs (bows and rhinestones) feel new again, all by way of a slight geographical departure.

Giuseppe Zanotti Embellished Leather Sandals Giuseppe Zanotti makes me want to get married

Ok, so maybe I don’t love the Giuseppe Zanotti Embellished Leather Sandals quite that much, but I do love them a lot. Glamourous, fun shoes in very light shades can be extremely difficult to find, and so many women want luxurious shoes to match their expensive wedding dresses. We’ve already talked about a pair of Manolo Blahniks that would be perfect for a traditional indoor wedding, but what if you’re getting married outside or during warm weather and want something a bit less prim? That’s where these shoes come in.

Ok, ok, so those Givenchy booties I wrote about a couple of days ago? Those aren’t the right shoes for everyone, but they do bring up an interesting topic – brightly colored shoes. Shoe fiends may understand the important place that brights have in the world of accessories, but if you’re unconvinced, please allow me to convince you.

The Giuseppe Zanotti Ruched Suede Booties demonstrate the importance of brights perfectly. The mere presence of the shocking blue color takes this shoe from average to gorgeous, and seeing the color against black tights in the Net-a-Porter pictures only makes the shoe’s appeal that much more obvious.
