An ode to the Frye boots that just wouldn’t fit

by

It’s December 6th, and I’m beginning to think that I will have to go bootless this winter.

You see, my feet are kind of weird. They’re slightly wide and have been since I was a baby, which presents its own set of issues, but they’re also…tall. I have what I’ve seen termed as “high-volume arches,” which means that my arches are so high that they make my foot thicker, top to bottom, than average. In most shoes, this isn’t that big of a deal – most styles don’t have non-adjustable straps or other types of coverage over that part of my foot, so it’s not something I think about very much. Until boot season, that is, and this season in particular, when my one and only wish was to comfortably don a pair of black Frye Veronica Slouch Boots. I saw them, I loved them, and things went downhill quickly from there.

Frye makes a casual, affordable oxford bootie

Let’s have a moment of honesty: sometimes I’m a little hesitant to write about shoes (or bags, or anything) that I like so much that I’d actually buy them. My thinking goes something like this: there may only be limited quantities left in my size already, and by the time I get done hemming and hawing over whether or not I want to spend the money, they may be gone if too many people have seen them and agreed with me that, yes, they are indeed great. When I was a little kid, I used to hide books I wanted to check out at the library so that no one would check them out before I returned the ones I already had. It’s a character flaw.

I always decide to post them, however, party because it’s my job and partly because talking about shoes with you guys is more fun than actually spending hundreds of dollars. The Frye Harlow Oxford Pumps are one shoe about which I had such an hesitation – they’ve already sold out on ShopBop in my size once, and I can’t bear to lose them again.

moto boots Replace your Uggs with motorcycle boots for fall

Time for a moment of contrition: for the past few winters, I’ve worn Uggs. Shamelessly, in public, for all to see. And I’ve loved my Uggs, since I embrace comfort, but I don’t think I can continue to wear them this fall. Good thing I don’t have to: motorcycle boots are popular again!

This trend showed its presence last year, but now that nearly every major brand is producing a motorcycle boot of some sort (Valentino even has one with a bow on it. I’m not kidding), it’s time to round them up and discuss. There are knee-high versions, stiletto versions, platform versions and every other type that you could possibly think of, but what I’m interested in right now is those that could replace Uggs for a lot of us – flat, ankle or midcalf and utilitarian.
