To me, the Pierre Hardy Metallic and Suede Booties look like science. What does that mean? I have no idea, but it sure is the first thing that popped into my head when I laid eyes on this design. The right-angled metallic leather appliques look like the opening credits of of a laser disc that my middle school science teacher used to show us when it was Friday and she didn’t want to teach as much as we didn’t want to learn, and back in that tail-end of the pre-DVD era, those pizza-sized discs were just about as cool as it got. Brian Atwood loves a three-dimension shoe. His most preferred methods of going above and beyond the normal dimensions of the foot are feathers and embroidery, but that doesn’t mean Atwood isn’t willing to experiment with all kinds of embellishment when it comes to designing a new pair of shoes. At first glance, I thought that the stuff hanging off of the Brian Atwood Twinkle Chain Fringe Booties was wispy little bits of feather. Read More…

After closing out 2011 with runway glitter booties that had the whole fashion industry in their thrall for a solid six months or more, Miu Miu has had something of a weird 2012, footwear-wise. The brand’s off-the-runway offerings continue to impress (I bought two pairs this year myself), but when it comes to the brand’s most directional and high-profile footwear, things haven’t been quite so promising. Thought we were done talking about Prada’s wacky Fall 2012 shoe collection? Not even close! We’ve already covered my favorite piece from the season’s offers, so now we’re going to take a look at something slightly more challenging – the Prada Spazzolato Mary Janes. These aren’t the infamous dunked-in-rubber model (we’ll get to those next week), but they’re a nice middle ground between those and the pretty, sparkly heels we discussed a couple of days ago. Ugly as sin. Yeah, I said it.

I can see the appeal in most footwear trends, even if they’re not things I’d wear personally. As a critic, you have to be willing to expand your willingness to consider the merit in things outside of your own personal taste, and I take that seriously. I’d never give something a bad review just because I wouldn’t wear it; that’s not a design flaw, in and of itself. Read More…

I thought I’d leave you ladies with something a tad dangerous for the weekend, and who better to supply that that Mr. Louboutin? The Christian Louboutin Lady Max Spiked Sandals are nothing if not attention-grabbing, and they’re fit for a goddess. Albeit an angry goddess about to go to war. Or maybe the goddess OF war. Either way, they feel pretty appropriate for a certain type of women. Read More…

The end of work today marks the three-day Memorial Day weekend for our American readers (or if you’re particularly lucky, like some of my friends, your holiday started yesterday evening), which is our unofficial start of the holiday season and a great excuse to head out to the nearest body of water, don your bathing suit for the first time this year and feel a tad patriotic about your mini-vacation. As I’m sure most of you guys already know, the severity of the ankle at which a shoe shifts transitions from the tallest point of the heel to where the ball of the foot rests is called the shoe’s “pitch.” A platform is often used to decrease a shoe’s pitch, because it raises the ball of the foot up a bit and negates part of the heel height.
