Admittedly, it had never occurred to me that anyone would look at an ice skate and say to themselves, “Self, someone will want to walk around all day in this,” but I suppose that’s why I’m writing instead of designing. And although the heel of the shoe does seem to be somewhat narrow like a hockey skate, the platforms sides appear to jut out in order to provide a bit more stability. But still, the question remains – which crazy fashion person will be the first to wear these to the Spring 2012 shows?

The prospect of walking in these shoes is too ankle-achingly awful to consider, so instead, let’s try and answer the previously posed question. Anna Dello Russo is always reliable for an insane and brilliant outfit, but there must be some better guesses to be head. Let us know in the comments.

Vogue.com photographer Phil Oh took to the streets during the recently concluded New York Fashion Week to document what is perhaps my favorite part of the entire event – what people are wearing outside. He managed to capture an image of the infamous DSquared Spine Heel Shoes in the wild, this time in the rarely seen white colorway. So now we know: not only is someone awesome/crazy enough to buy these, but she actually had the cojones to take them out for a spin in public.

If you don’t fall in to any of those categories, then you might be a future candidate to own the DSquared Studded Platform Jellies. Even if they’re not for you, though, you’ve got to admit that they’re kind of fun to look at.

They’re just kind of…stupendously statement-y, aren’t they? I’m not sure that this is a statement that most people want to make, but the combination of spikes, clear plastic and a stiletto and platform so tall that my ankles hurt just looking at them is a sartorial choice that will only be made by someone very, very sure of their own personal style.

The best shoes often aren’t compelling to 99% of the world’s population, but I’m not entirely convinced that what we see here falls into such a lofty category. There isn’t a whole lot of artistry or creativity in these shoes (except for the hidden studs on the underside – that’s pretty cute), so unless you’re Taylor Momsen or perhaps Marilyn Manson, I’d advise you to save your pennies for a pair with a more interesting aesthetic. (May I suggest the Dsquared Spine Shoes?) Buy through Zappos for $1173.

Time for a moment of contrition: for the past few winters, I’ve worn Uggs. Shamelessly, in public, for all to see. And I’ve loved my Uggs, since I embrace comfort, but I don’t think I can continue to wear them this fall. Good thing I don’t have to: motorcycle boots are popular again!

This trend showed its presence last year, but now that nearly every major brand is producing a motorcycle boot of some sort (Valentino even has one with a bow on it. I’m not kidding), it’s time to round them up and discuss. There are knee-high versions, stiletto versions, platform versions and every other type that you could possibly think of, but what I’m interested in right now is those that could replace Uggs for a lot of us – flat, ankle or midcalf and utilitarian.

Gucci Edie Ankle Boots: If you’re not sure that you want to go whole-hog with a bold, chunky boot, then these are your best choice – think of them as motorcycle boots for someone that rides a Vespa. They still have all the charm and detail without a hyper-masculine feel, which makes them the most versatile of the bunch. Buy through Saks for $840.

Jimmy Choo Bike Leather Boots: This pair is my personal favorite – they retain all the chunky attitude of traditional motorcycle boots without a few of the hardest edges, and the wrinkled, soft-looking leather keeps them luxurious. For the price, they better be. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $1050.

Dolce & Gabbana Lug-Sole Ankle Boots: Naturally this trend borrows a great deal from early-90s grunge, and this pair references those styles more than most. The super-thick sole probably reminds everyone under 45 of a pair of shoes that they had in 1993, for better or for worse. Buy through Saks for $825.

DSquared Biker Boots: DSquared’s interpretation of the motorcycle boot trend is where you look if you want a version that’s very straightforward. These may not be as distinctive as what some brands are doing, but they do a good job capturing the prototypical motorcycle boot feel. You might actually be able to wear these on a bike, if you were so inclined. Buy through Luisa Via Roma for $825.

Frye Engineer Boots: Frye was doing biker boots before they were trendy and they’ll be doing them long after; it would be silly not to include them in this list. This pair also presents the best value: all of the other shoes listed here are more than $800. Buy through ShopBop for $208.

One thing’s for sure, however – these boots (and the other shoes in the spine-inspired collection) are sure to cause a strong reaction in almost anyone, no matter how casual of a shoe fan he or she might be. You’ve got to give the designers credit for going for the look whole-hog, but is the final product successful? I certainly think it is.

We’ve seen a trend in recent seasons toward sculptural, artistic heels from many brands, and this extreme example seems like a somewhat natural progression of those ideas. The curvature of the “bones,” the high platform and the animalistic quality remind me a lot of the famous Alexander McQueen armadillo heels from Spring/Summer 2010, and they probably owe that design a bit of credit. They do get points for taking the idea even more literally than their predecessors, however, and the bony detail is something I’d very much like to see in person. These shoes are clearly intended for a very specific customer, but the teenage goth living deep inside of me totally covets them. Buy through Luisa Via Roma for $1495.
