Here’s Ashley Olsen, completely jumping the gun on spring by donning her Celine Calf Hair Espadrille Slippers just a few weeks too early. Celine goodies are never available online, but you can pick up a pair of these shoes right now at basically any department store that carries Celine (we’ve seen them at Barneys in particular) for $495 in both black and leopard.

We were JUST waxing poetic about Celine and our other fave designer espadrilles last week, but we didn’t expect to see them in the wild quite so soon – especially in NYC, where it is still far from espadrille weather. But of course, what other espadrilles could you possibly pair with a fur coat, if not a Celine calf hair espadrille? (The obvious answer of course, would be NO espadrilles, but I’m sure we’ll all be doing this in 3 years time. So it goes with Olsen fashion.)

I’d ask you if you remember the bizarre fur pumps and Birkenstock-like sandals from Celine Spring 2013, but how could you forget? The shoes set the fashion Instagram world ablaze from the moment they debuted on the runway and spawned countless blog posts, Twitter conversations and even a few serious articles about what they mean for fashion. Personally, I’m doubtful that they mean anything more significant than that Phoebe Philo is taking a page out of Margiela’s book, but they’re worth a closer look anyway.

Is Phoebe Philo trolling us? Probably. Not only are the shoes furry, but they’re from a summer collection. Philo is purposefully challenging our ideas of the ways in which material like fur can be used and when it can be worn, and with fur pumps debuting next to flat, manly fur-line sandals, she seems to also be challenging our ideas of what kinds of shapes can be stylish. Will everyone be wearing fur-lined shower shoes come July? Doubtful, but everyone will still remember that the team behind Celine is pretty clever. I’m just putting this out there, but…Celine might be screwing with us. This might be an Emperor’s New Clothes situation, wherein Phoebe Philo is testing just how devoted we are to her whims by proposing the idea of fur-lined (and -covered) Birkenstocks and pumps and seeing just how mindlessly we all flock to them. Based on the number of effusive Instagram pictures I saw from the Celine Spring 2013 show (about the shoes specifically), lots of people are buying in. Maybe I’m just not imaginative enough.

I’ve been thinking for a while that Birkenstocks are headed for a trendy moment once again – I’ve seen Ashley Olsen wear them, as well as Eva Chen from Teen Vogue and a few of my friends in the industry. When you start to notice that many people who know about fashion wearing something that was formerly reviled, that’s a significant trend. I just didn’t expect Furkenstocks to become a thing, let alone pumps covered in fur. If you prefer your oddness to be of the Margiela variety, check out the pedicure pumps in this collection. One thing I did like, though? In the middle of all the madness were two pairs of traditional black satin pumps, as if to remind us all that Philo and Celine are in on the joke. I love a good chunky heel. I feel like I’ve waited so long for them to come back in style, and now that they’re back, I’m going to enjoy them for as long as humanly possible. Not only do they make a big visual impact, but a chunky heel is much more forgiving and comfortable for the person who’s wearing it. At the end of the day, fashion does need to be functional most of the time.

If Celine Spring 2012 is any indication, Phoebe Philo is a woman after my own heart. (But I already knew that, duh.) From nondescript black suede pumps to eyecatching red-platformed, ankle-strapped head-turners, this line is for those of us who have been waiting for stripper shoes to go out of style since they showed up in the mid-2000s. Never change, Ms. Philo.

Let me begin this review by saying that I really want to like the footwear from Celine Fall 2011. I think that understanding these finely crafted elfin shoes would somehow make me a better or more interesting person, and I’m always looking for opportunities to be better or more interesting. As it is, I guess I’m a dullard and dimwit, because I’m simply not picking up what Celine is putting down with this collection.

Of the theme and variations that Phoebe Philo has going with these shoes, I like the ones with the highest heels the best; if they’re in all black or color blocked black and red, even better. But other than those few pairs, the rest seem almost comically Robin Hoodish to me, particularly when the colors are greenish and the heels are of the kitten variety. I wonder if a band of merry men is included with the purchase price? Because if so, and if those merry men can also be selected for attractiveness, sign me up. Other than that, I’ll pass.
