I love a good chunky heel. I feel like I’ve waited so long for them to come back in style, and now that they’re back, I’m going to enjoy them for as long as humanly possible. Not only do they make a big visual impact, but a chunky heel is much more forgiving and comfortable for the person who’s wearing it. At the end of the day, fashion does need to be functional most of the time.

If Celine Spring 2012 is any indication, Phoebe Philo is a woman after my own heart. (But I already knew that, duh.) From nondescript black suede pumps to eyecatching red-platformed, ankle-strapped head-turners, this line is for those of us who have been waiting for stripper shoes to go out of style since they showed up in the mid-2000s. Never change, Ms. Philo.

Let me begin this review by saying that I really want to like the footwear from Celine Fall 2011. I think that understanding these finely crafted elfin shoes would somehow make me a better or more interesting person, and I’m always looking for opportunities to be better or more interesting. As it is, I guess I’m a dullard and dimwit, because I’m simply not picking up what Celine is putting down with this collection.

Of the theme and variations that Phoebe Philo has going with these shoes, I like the ones with the highest heels the best; if they’re in all black or color blocked black and red, even better. But other than those few pairs, the rest seem almost comically Robin Hoodish to me, particularly when the colors are greenish and the heels are of the kitten variety. I wonder if a band of merry men is included with the purchase price? Because if so, and if those merry men can also be selected for attractiveness, sign me up. Other than that, I’ll pass.
