Summer is winding down to a close, and thus, it’s time for us to look back on the best celebrity shoe picks of the season. It’s easy to see how how trends have changed in the last year–if you need a refresher, just take a look at our top picks from last summer. Case in point: when was the last time you saw a celeb in a PVC shoe? Or a platform pump? Those trends seem to be effectively dead and buried, for the time being. The only trend that’s survived two summers in a row? Birkenstocks. Yes, Birks! But you know what those look like, so we didn’t feel the need to include them here.

Sandals were incredibly minimal this summer, and no other shoe demonstrates this as well as the much-heralded Stuart Weitzman Nudist Sandal. Those definitely made the list, though I won’t tell you who’s wearing them, because it’s a surprise.

Casual kicks also had their day, as did butterfly wing-adorned Sophia Webster sandals and COLOR. Bold, delicious color. But I won’t narrate the entire list to you. Check out our top shoe looks, tell us your faves, and let us know what shoes have propelled you through summer 2014.

Serena Williams recently visited The Late Show in NYC and played a little tennis outside with Dave Letterman while wearing a towering pair of Balmain Braided Cotton and Leather Sandals. She also wore a chic, form-fitting white pencil skirt and a black midriff-baring top. We’re betting none of that prevented her from soundly beating Letterman. You can currently purchase Serena’s sandals for $1,151 at MATCHESFASHION.COM

In case you don’t follow tennis, be advised that Balmain sandals are not considered appropriate footwear. (In related brand news: Balmain recently got the rap star shout-out from Nicki Minaj in her “Anaconda” video.) I rarely ogle the bodies of the celebrities whilst discussing their shoe choices, but can we talk about Serena’s insanely chiseled calves? I’m taping one of these photos to my lap-top for workout inspiration.

The Ice Bucket Challenge has gone international! Here’s UK pop star Rita Ora, accepting the challenge from New Zealander pal Iggy Azalea and getting properly iced outside her hotel in NYC while wearing Adidas Adilette Pool Slide Sandals. You can find these exact sandals for $30 at Urban Outfitters.

Rita has repped for the Adidas brand quite a lot in the last few months, and for good reason: she’ll be doing a series of capsule collections with Adidas, the first of which will make its debut in September. You can read more about Rita’s fall line for Adidas here, and you can find even more Ora in “The Many Bags of Rita Ora” on PurseBlog.

Here’s Rihanna, leaving Butter restaurant in NYC after a dinner with her lady friends. She’s rocking a pair of white Christian Louboutin Impera Lace-Up Pumps, as well as some insanely long hair extensions. These shoes are from a previous season and are now completely sold out, but a broad selection of Rihanna-appropriate Louboutin pumps can be found at Neiman Marcus.

If it hasn’t been totally telegraphed already: we adore Ri-Ri. She has the best style/stylist in all of celebdom, and you can see all of her fabulous looks, fancy pumps and designer handbags in “The Many Bags of Rihanna” and “The Many Bags of Rihanna, Part 2″ on PurseBlog, as well as “The Many Shoes of Rihanna” right here on TS.

Elle Fanning recently attended the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Installation Dinner in Beverly Hills wearing a gorgeous, glittery pair of Christian Louboutin Iriza Strass Pumps, paired with a striking Vivienne Westwood Gold Label dress. These stunning Irizas aren’t currently available online, sadly, but a lovely burgundy satin Iriza that will be absolute perfection for fall can be had for $625 at Net-A-Porter.

I write about fashion every day, but I am frankly stumped as to how to explain what’s going on with the back of Elle’s dress. It’s like a strange peplum effect that creates something I’ll call “intentional bubble butt,” which looks good on ingenues like Elle, who have just the right amount of butt. In any case, you can see more of Elle’s best looks, bags and shoes in “The Many Bags of Dakota and Elle Fanning.”

Ashley Tisdale was recently spotted gassing up the G Wagon in Toluca Lake, California, wearing a pair of black Nappa leather Stuart Weitzman Gladiator Sandals, which are yet another popular style from the brand for 2014. Stuart Weitzman seems to be winning the hearts of celebs left and right this summer. You can find Ashley’s exact sandals for $398 at Nordstrom.

Gladiators have been pretty hot in recent months, and we’ve found several great designer takes on the gladiator for under $500. For a similarly fair price, you can buy the most celeb-beloved Stuart Weitzman style of the season: the Nudist Sandal. TS contributor Katherine recently took the Nudists for a spin, and you can read her “TalkShoes Testimonial” here.

Here’s Taylor Swift, coming home from an appearance on The Tonight Show in a pair of two-tone Bionda Castana Dekota Pumps. These are perhaps the most fashion-forward shoes we’ve ever seen her wear; normally, Taylor sticks to basic designer pumps or more affordable, vintage-inspired footwear. You can find a similar pair of Biondas in solid ivory for $880 at Net-A-Porter.

If you’re loving T-Swift’s grown-up new look, be sure to check out our brand new post, “The Many Bags of Taylor Swift, Part 2″ on our sister site PurseBlog. And if you’ve recently been struck in the head by a large, blunt object and can’t recall what Taylor actually looked like before 2014, you can refresh your memory by viewing “Part 1″ here.

Here’s Kim Kardashian with her sister Kourtney, doing Kardashian things in the Hamptons. Kim’s wearing a pair of old favorites, the Alaïa Embellished Suede Sandals. (And by “old” we mean she acquired them no less than 3 months ago.) These gorgeous sandals are sadly nowhere to be found online, but you can shop all things Alaïa at Net-A-Porter.

We spotted Kim wearing these Alaïas with an entirely different little black dress in NYC back in June. Practically everything Alaïa makes jives perfectly with Kim’s Kanye-curated looks. And really, does she ever look bad in black? We think not. BTW, we’re not sure who designed Kourtney’s animal print pumps, but if you know, feel free to chime in!
