Brian Atwood Brian Atwood comes out of left field for Fall 2011

Like Christian Louboutin, Brian Atwood tends to release some of his more eccentric shoes for initial press previews, so don’t panic if the handful of shoes in the photos below don’t ring your bell. As always, Atwood’s collection will surely run the gamut from wearable classics to outrageous novelty shoes to be worn only by the most confident footwear aficionado, and in this group, there’s much more of the latter than the former.

Although a few of these designs will likely elicit a negative reaction (What’s all that stuff hanging off the leopard shoe? Fur? Hair? Is there an important distinction between fur and hair?), I fully appreciate that Atwood lets his freak flag fly. The fashion world needs more fun, funky shoes, not more pairs of black pumps. Unless you’re talking about Atwood’s immaculate black pleated silk pumps atop a spindly metal stiletto, of course. The fashion world (read: my closet) definitely needs more of those.

It’s anchors away with Brian Atwood

We all know that brights and colorblocking are big, important trends for spring, and they’re shaping up to make this the most exuberant season in recent memory. Pops of color are everywhere, and a designer as bold as Brian Atwood is surely not going to be left out.

The Brian Atwood Patent-Trim Platform Pumps have spring written all over them – orange trim, in-your-face stripes and a flirtatious, not-too-serious sensibility that will make them fun, if slightly difficult, to work into your everyday wardrobe. If you think you can pull it off, then these shoes might be well worth the challenge.

On average, Brian Atwood‘s brand of irreverent wit works out pretty well. Unfortunately, creativeness usually begets a few design clunkers every now and then, which is what the Brian Atwood Multicolor Cutout Pumps are.

Uncommon color combinations are a tricky road to traverse, and combining two brights with two pastels doesn’t have great results for Atwood in these shoes. Other than that, the shape and material are great, but the difficult, non-intuitive colors make the shoe nearly unwearable. At the very least, I can’t think of a good way for a woman to work this design into her wardrobe.

I love Brian Atwood’s shoes for a lot of reasons, but mostly I love him because of his penchant for taking a basic design and tweaking it just enough to make it special and interesting. Sometimes he goes a little overboard in the pursuit of the ever-so-slightly different, but when you’re designing shoes like his, the risk is usually proportionate to the reward.

The Brian Atwood Python Platform Slingbacks perfectly illustrate why Atwood’s shoes are so lust-worthy. Making an attractive python platform isn’t hard; a single, neutral color and a structure that appropriately shows off the material’s texture is really all a designer needs in order to do it well. What Atwood does differently, though, makes all the difference.

Atwood 5 Fashion Week Shoes: Brian Atwood Spring 2011

Whenever I look at a pair of Brian Atwood shoes, I can’t help but get the feeling that the man behind the brand really enjoys his work. Atwood’s designs tend to have a joyfulness to them that’s often missing in high-end fashion, but like Christian Louboutin, Atwood doesn’t seem the least bit self-serious about his role as a designer of fabulous footwear. On the contrary, he seems to embrace the utter frivolity of the business.

Accordingly, every shoe in the designer’s Spring 2011 collection exhibits a healthy dose of exuberance and fun. Some of the shoes – bronze flat sandals or tan cork platforms – seem inherently wearable, while others – I’m guessing you can figure out which ones – prize aesthetics over functionality, but they all manage to bring a smile to my face. For luxury shoe prices, I don’t mind a little bit of an upper along with my footwear.

brian atwood balleto sandals I like lucite and all, but these Brian Atwoods are for working girls only

In a way, I really like the Brian Atwood Balleto Platform Sandals. They’re clearly a shoe meant for women who don’t take themselves or their sartorial choices too seriously, and a sense of humor is an underrated virtue in the luxury business. The fact that these shoes exist makes me like Brian Atwood more as a designer, even though I wouldn’t buy them.

In an effort to load up on humor in this design, it seems as though Atwood forgot to add enough luxury to make the shoes balance correctly for high-dollar consumers. Generally, I think too many sexy shoes are regarded as “hooker heels” or stripper-appropriate, but this might be a pair for which that designation is somewhat deserved.

One of the most ravishing looks on Megan Fox was her ensemble at the preview of Jonah Hex wearing a sexy red Armani Privé dress paired with Brian Atwood Donna pumps. Brian Atwood is one of our favorite shoe designers because it is beyond clear that he understands the art of designing shoes. There is a distinct art to it, and Brian Atwood not only knows it but also perfects it.

The Brian Atwood Donna Pumps are the perfect example of a black patent pumps, which is a staple for any woman’s shoe wardrobe.

Hello gorgeous! Not only are Brian Atwood shoes drop dead gorgeous but also the designer is not too shabby to look at himself. Actually, I am half tempted to just find a picture of Brian Atwood and include his photo in each shoe review we do of his designs. But I won’t, even though you all now know that I want to.

Celebrities started to wear Brian Atwood shoes in droves. The amount of celebrities that are fans grows rapidly by the week, so we know he is a designer that will be part of our vocabulary.

I am majorly crushing on the Brian Atwood Duchess Leopard Suede Slingbacks for the simple reason that everyone needs a leopard print shoe in their wardrobe and Brian Atwood created a sassy yet classy version.
