Sometimes you want to ring in the New Year in a more casual setting, and a few close friends and a few bottles of champagne can be just as fun as getting rowdy. I personally prefer to avoid the crowds and mayhem of New Year’s, and while I like a stand-out shoe to wear for the occasion, I don’t want one that feels out of place for a low-key environment.

Our picks for the-low key New Year’s Eve folks out there are a little heavy on the gold, which seems to be a major trend, but we managed to scare up some crystals and glitter for those of you who don’t love gold but still need to ring in the new year with shimmer and shine.

Ah, New Year’s Eve. Night of drunken mishaps, midnight kisses and sequin dresses. While others may be focused on the perfect sparkly miniskirt or even the perfect silver or gold clutch, I am a shoe girl. I attach sentimental value to the shoes I wear on special occasions, and any excuse to buy a new pair is okay with me.

The biggest problem I have with bags is that they cost the equivalent of about two and a half pairs of shoes (or at least the shoes I tend to buy). I am in L.O.V.E. with the Givenchy Pandora, but the thought of saving up 2 Gs is a little overwhelming. However, splurging for a pair of $600 pumps? Done and done. Ever since I bought my first pair of Givenchy heels, I’ve been fiending for another fix. I’m having a Givenchy moment, you guys. So many designers have been turning out stellar booties this year – everywhere you look, more functional, fashionable booties. The shape is so classic and wearable that scooping up the best examples and building a versatile bootie collection has been a little too easy lately (and perhaps a little too hard on my credit cards). The Costume National Wrapped Ankle Booties are simultaneously refined and edgy, which is what makes them so darn wearable. It’s official – I’m in lust with these shoes.

Beyond loving the sleek and edgy look, these booties are pretty much classic. I don’t foresee the bootie trend going anywhere anytime soon, and it may just be ongoing sticker shock from my Chloe Susan purchase earlier this year, but these seem somewhat more reasonable…Buy through Barneys New York for $865.

Well ladies, I think I’ve found my solution in the Manolo Blahnik Terry Trimmed Driver.

I love the olive-y color (so neutral) and the pop of blue terry which adds that splash of personality I’m always hunting for. Plus, they look so comfy. They are much preppier then the shoes I normally gravitate toward, but maybe that just means I’m growing up. I mean not everything can (or should) be covered in studs or crystals…right?

With every obsession, you’ll find me ‘pinning’ on Pinterest and ogling looks with the shoes on style blogs, all while figuring out what kind of gymnastics I can do with my bank account to contort it into a convincing argument that I can afford them. And every time, I think to myself “You will never fall in love this hard again. There can never be another shoe that incites THIS level of lust.”

This year, the first shoe was the Chloe Susan. I procured them in Paris, justifying the purchase due to the VAT refund. And then…the Givenchy Kitten Heel Lace Up Sandal. I found them at Kirna Zabete in SoHo when I was supposed to be working. Without warning, there was the familiar lump in my throat, the urgent, slightly panicked feeling…I had to have them. The heel is the perfect height, low enough to trek the streets of NYC. The open-toe makes them useful for all but the coldest of the winter months and they are just so damn edgy. Mere moments ago, Amanda informed me that Vince had quietly launched it’s new shoe line at Neiman Marcus. I was elated. I am a SHOE GIRL. In all caps. I have a serious collection happening. So imagine my pure, unadulterated joy upon finding out that my fave brand for clothes was now going to issue treats for my feet. That is, until I viewed the collection. These shoes don’t look like minimal, chic Vince; they look more like juvenile, Steve Madden-ish knockoffs of something more expensive. We’ve got an over the knee boot with a chunky heel (are people still doing the over-the-knee thing? Did I miss that memo?), 2 pairs of chunky heeled, non-descript boots, a pair of wedges and a total knock-off of the rag & bone classic, the Newbury boot.

The one saving grace is the shearling lined bootie, which basically serves the same function as UGGS – but more stylish.

These babies aren’t cheap either – while you can get yourself the shearling booties for $298, the over-the-knee boots will set you back $875.

Ladies, I am heartbroken. Let’s hope Vince finds it’s footing (pun intended).
