I may be in the minority, but I don’t hate Kim Kardashian. I don’t even dislike her. I wouldn’t call myself a fan (mostly because I’m not sure what she does that requires the response of fandom), but she’s a perfectly amusing media presence that occasionally enriches my life through ridiculous tabloid stories. Lately, though, I find myself feeling a bit bad for Kim, which is an emotion I never expected to have. Read More…
In case you’re not yet familiar with British designer Sophia Webster’s wacky, whimsical footwear, now’s the time to start paying attention. We wrote a bit of a primer on Webster’s shoes a while back, and buoyed by the success of fellow inventive Brits Charlotte Olympia and Nicholas Kirkwood, the relatively new brand is starting to crop up at retailers all over the US. Ok, so I understand that mermaids don’t have feet. That’s an inherent flaw in mermaids. If they did have feet, though, I’m almost positive that they’d love the Chrissie Morris Holographic Tie Sandals. This particular combination of aqua, teal and a shimmering finish can’t bring to mind anything but the most beautiful of mythic ocean creatures, can it? There’s probably a reference to be made here about Ariel’s footwear choices after giving up her voice. Read More…
Most brands have a few standard heel shapes that they prefer to use, depending on the type of shoe they intend to make. If you spend a lot of your time looking at shoes (and, I mean, who doesn’t?), you can probably tell the difference between, say, a Louboutin and a Manolo, even if you’re only shown the heel. It’s a great way for a designer to brand his or her footwear designs. Read More…
Looking back, the 90s feel like a simpler time. Celebrities had body fat and lacked hair extensions, grunge was fashionable and no one expected anybody to teeter around in five-inch stilettos. All of that stuff has changed considerably in the last 20 years, but if you’re feeling particularly nostalgic, fashion is starting to come back around to the conventions of the day. Read More…
I’ve never been a believer in the spring bootie. By the time warmth weather rolls around, especially up north, the last thing I want to do is keep my feet confined in the same type of shoes that I’ve been wearing for at least four months. Last week, though, I did a shoddy job packing for a trip to Atlanta, and everything changed. Read More…
A lot of people associate warm colors like pink, orange and yellow with warm weather, but for me, the combination that calls to mind spring and summer the most is blue and white. Maybe it’s because my southern upbringing was full of slightly preppy influences (no matter how much I resisted them), or maybe it’s because I associate those colors with linen (for reasons I can’t entirely explain). You can say a lot about Charlotte Olympia, but you can’t say that she doesn’t take advantage of the space that’s available to her. Shoe designers have it kind of rough – they’re constrained by both the essential structure of a functional shoe and its inherently limited size, and out of those constraints have come some fantastically inventive ways to make an impact with only a little bit of leather and a lot of ingenuity.
