A lot of people associate warm colors like pink, orange and yellow with warm weather, but for me, the combination that calls to mind spring and summer the most is blue and white. Maybe it’s because my southern upbringing was full of slightly preppy influences (no matter how much I resisted them), or maybe it’s because I associate those colors with linen (for reasons I can’t entirely explain). You can say a lot about Charlotte Olympia, but you can’t say that she doesn’t take advantage of the space that’s available to her. Shoe designers have it kind of rough – they’re constrained by both the essential structure of a functional shoe and its inherently limited size, and out of those constraints have come some fantastically inventive ways to make an impact with only a little bit of leather and a lot of ingenuity. Generally, the only way that summer is minimal is in the amount of clothing which we’re all not wearing when we’re outside. From an aesthetic standpoint, spring and summer’s bright colors, prints and natural textures tend to lend themselves to a more maximal look, particularly once you add sun-fearing accessories like wide-brimmed hats and big sunglasses. This summer, though, one part of your look is going to be very minimal, if designers get their way: your shoes. Read More…
Sometimes, a Look for Less makes you wonder why you spend so much on premiere designer shoes. Other times, it’s a clear indication of exactly why we shell out what we do for the best kicks around. You may not heard of Schutz Shoes quite yet, but if you like affordable footwear that doesn’t exactly look affordable, you’re going to want to take note of the Brazilian shoe brand’s arrival in the United States. The brand opened its first store outside of South America on Madison Avenue in New York City late last year, and for spring, Schutz has become available at stores like ShopBop and Zappos. Read More…
During my adolescence, I never tanned well enough to use the “tan tattoo” stickers that the popular girls in school used to make shapes on themselves in the sun on spring break. The most popular ones that I can remember were palm trees and Playboy’s bunny logo – you stuck them on yourself, went tanning, and hours later, peeled them off to reveal a pale shape on your skin that would remain until you tanned over it. Before we get into the awesome Spring 2013 Coach Online Shoe Closet, I have to ask – do you own any Coach shoes? If not, I’d highly recommend the brand’s footwear, even if you don’t like its bags. I have multiple pairs of Coach boots that I’ve worn year after year, including a pair of summer sandals that I’ve worn almost religiously since I graduated college. Read More…
