Once and for all, I think we can finally put the sneaker wedge to bed. Every brand on Earth has done one by now, and I’m hoping that now that we’ve all got that out of our collective system, we can focus on something much cooler: regular sneakers. And while I’m always a proponent of picking up a pair of Nike Dunks instead of a pair of designer kicks, the latter has become very much a trend among the fashion set, so I’m here to talk about it. I spend perhaps more time than most squinting at the feet of starlets and celebs, trying to ascertain exactly which shoes they’re wearing. In some ways, Christian Louboutin makes that task easier – his signature red soles are visible in a way that no other brand has yet figured out how to replicate. (Except by trying their hand at their own colored soles, of course.) Figuring out that a shoe is a Louboutin is only have the struggle, though – which one is it? Read More…
Lanvin’s not immune to following along with a trend (these shoes are holographic, of course), but I’m continually impressed by often much the French brand finds ways to march to the beat of its own drummer when it comes time to make a shoe. The obvious thing to do with the Lanvin Pink Holographic Pumps would have been to turn them into a single-sole, pointed-toe stiletto, but that’s not what Lanvin opted to do. Read More…
Tory Burch is not exactly the first designer to come to mind when you think of adventurous shoes. She practically built her empire on colorful ballet flats, and while useful and comfortable, a pair of Revas or Eddies isn’t exactly pushing the envelope when it comes to footwear design. I’m not entirely sure that the Tory Burch Ambrosia Runway Sandals are exactly “pushing the envelope,” either, but they’re certainly a bold departure for a preppy, polished American brand. Read More…
In general, it’s not rocket science to predict what I’ll like. Many of you probably have a certain sense of it just from casually reading the blog (I know this to be true because occasionally I get an email with a link to something that a reader thinks I’ll like, and they’re almost always right), and I very rarely surprise myself. There’s a reason that Nicholas Kirkwood is so beloved by people in the fashion industry – he’s incredibly good at what he does. Creative, luxurious, modern; his shoes tick all the right boxes and look like nothing else on the market. (Except all the designers rushing to imitate him, of course, but they’re mostly not doing a very good job of it.) When you combine his shoes with Moda Operandi’s eye for the quirky side of luxury, you get a match made in shoe heaven. Read More…
Last year, when I heard that The Great Gatsby was being pushed back to the beginning of this summer, I was confused – why push back a movie with a stellar cast and huge buzz? Based on the onslaught of designer deco products that have hit high-end retailers in the last month, though, it wouldn’t entire surprise me to find out that the movie had been delayed to allow fancy fashion brands an opportunity to slip 20s-themed pieces, like these Charlotte Olympia Sunset Deco T-Strap Pumps, into their collections. Although I don’t generally carry them myself, I don’t have anything specific against a monogram bag, as long as its well-executed and feels modern. Most materials, even those that tend to feel tacky or gaudy, can be used in judicious ways that retain the air of luxury that most designers are looking to cultivate. It should be about execution and context, not an inherent bias against a material. Read More…
