When I first saw the shoes from Fendi Spring 2013, I was delighted. Nicholas Kirkwood had stepped in to design the label’s runway footwear for the show, and out of that collaboration came interesting, counter-intuitive shoes with removable pieces that required the viewer to reconsider what constituted beautiful footwear. At its best, that’s what runway fashion is supposed to do – challenge consumers to think harder about the things they wear and what they mean. Read More…

Moda Operandi Punk Shoes

When you think “punk,” your first thought might not be high-end fashion or super-luxe fashion retailer Moda Operandi, but the site’s Punk: From Chaos to Couture boutique, celebrating the theme of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s 2013 Costume Institute Gala, might just change that. The punk aesthetic has had an indelible impact on modern fashion, and to acknowledge that, Moda has gathered together an enviable mix of designers, artists and vintage purveyors to bring you a unique mix of exclusive pieces that make the link between punk and high fashion clearer than ever. Tom Ford Fall 2013 Boots (7)

If you thought Rihanna’s crazy Tom Ford gladiator sandal-boots from earlier this week were crazy, then you might want to avert your eyes – the irrepressible Mr. Ford is taking things up a notch (ok, several notches) for his Fall 2013 shoe collection. The collection itself was an incredibly bold mix of comic book colors and multiethnic prints, and that look extended all the way down to the models’ toes. Read More…

The Row Superga Sneakers

When sneaker company Superga, newly purchased by Steve Madden, announced that the Olsen Twins would be its creative directors, The Row x Superga sneakers was perhaps only a matter of time. After all, The Row doesn’t have a shoe line of its own (yet – surely there’s one coming), and the simple, traditional sneaker styles favored by Superga fit in well with how the Olsens, particularly Ashley, who prefers flat, comfortable shoes from Birkenstocks to Celine espadrilles for her everyday activities. Gucci Victoire Buckle Sandal

Shoes, especially modern designer shoes, are an exercise in design extremes. How high can a heel be before the human foot can’t handle the pitch of a shoe’s sole? How tall can a platform be before everyone falls over? How high can we make a boot shaft before it’s basically a pair of pants? In the past few years, nearly all of those questions have been answered by some kind of high-profile footwear master (usually Christian Louboutin), and with this Gucci Victoire Buckle Sandal, we’ve answered yet another one – how minimalist can a stiletto really be? Oscar de la Renta Embellished Canvas Slippers

It occurred to me that we hadn’t played our Fill in the Blank reindeer games in a while, and today, the perfect opportunity happened to present itself by way of the Oscar de la Renta Embellished Canvas Slippers. Despite the name (and the shape), these shoes aren’t meant for padding around the house; instead, they’re like a very fancy flat mule, meant for wear during any casual mule activities you might encounter. Casadei Spring 2013 Wedges

If tasked with explaining the Casadei Spring 2013 Wedge Sandals to someone, I don’t know what I’d call them, other than “really quite tall.” Of course, I doubt I’ll ever have to accomplish such a task – if you’ve seen one of these shoes, odds are you won’t forget it, and although you might be short on words, it’s likely not because these shoes defy description.
