I’m not a major awards show junkie, but watching the Grammys red carpet is one of my favorite TV spectacles. Musicians are a little insane, even by “creative” standards, and they never cease to disappoint when it comes to showing up on national television looking like stark raving crazy people. Another reason that the Grammys are a fave? More short dresses means more interesting shoes to look at. Read More…
Alexander Wang’s shoe collections have a history of containing designs both totally wearable and absolutely absurd, and the limited shoe styles showcased during Alexander Wang Fall 2013 over the weekend fell exactly along that dichotomy. Beautiful draped suede heels that doubled as booties and pumps? Check. Open-toe white wedges covered almost entirely with a grey woolen sock? Double check.
Wang’s collection (which was, on the whole, his strongest outing yet) included tons of cozy-but-modern grey knits, and those knits extended all the way down to the floor, literally. Read More…
I’d ask you if you remember the bizarre fur pumps and Birkenstock-like sandals from Celine Spring 2013, but how could you forget? The shoes set the fashion Instagram world ablaze from the moment they debuted on the runway and spawned countless blog posts, Twitter conversations and even a few serious articles about what they mean for fashion. Personally, I’m doubtful that they mean anything more significant than that Phoebe Philo is taking a page out of Margiela’s book, but they’re worth a closer look anyway. Read More…
I didn’t realize until after I had had a full fantasy about the Giuseppe Zanotti Suede Leaf Sandals that they are decorated with leaves and not flames, so forgive me for my answer to my own Fill in the Blank, because it feels slightly silly now. (I don’t always immediately read the name of a shoe design before I fall into Fantasyland.) When I first laid eyes on these sandals, I immediately assumed that what we were looking at was gilded flames, and naturally, I felt that they must be worn by the Girl on Fire herself, Katniss Everdeen of The Hunger Games
Based on what I know of Katniss (which, admittedly, is not everything – I’ve only read the first book in the series), she would hate these shoes and likely not be skilled at walking in heels, particularly the ultra-high, thin, almost heeless wedges that Zanotti has created here. Read More…
As I write this, I, along with everyone else in the New York City metro area, am waiting to endure the wrath of Mother Nature in snow form. I’ll be fine because as a nervous southerner, I bought fancy snow boots and a parka as soon as the temperatures started to cool during my first year living in NYC. I’ve had little chance to use either because of the wonky winter weather we’ve had for the past two winters. Read More…
I’m not sure why I’m so curmudgeonly when it comes to sneaker trends. I love regular sneakers in all their incarnations and think they have a fascinating history as part of America’s social fabric, especially during the 80s and 90s. I love that Nike has stepped up to the plate and embraced the idea of being a fashion brand along with an athletic brand. Read More…
It never ceases to amaze me how, when a shoe is very carefully designed, it can so clearly evoke a particular theme or mood or person with only a few details. Usually when that happens, it’s a shoe that makes me think of a city – Miami and Las Vegas, for example, have very distinct footwear personalities, and the sight of a shoe that would fit in perfectly in one of those locales can transport me there almost immediately.
