When I look at the Acne Daring Suede Booties, I can only imagine orthopedists the world over with dollar signs in their eyes, anticipating how difficult it must be to walk in shoes with such perilously tall and skinny heels. Normal stilettos are difficult enough, but this bootie may have the thinnest heel I’ve ever seen. They may even be more extreme than the Christian Louboutin Big Lips Pumps.

Designers as varied as Alexander Wang and Louis Vuitton have embraced a thicker high heel for fall, and the change in structure couldn’t be more welcome. It’s unlikely that stilettos will ever go out of fashion or stop being embraced by the overwhelming majority of shoe addicts, but for those of us who can be a tad clumsy atop six-inch heels, a bit more surface area on which to balance is a trend that I hope will settle in and stay awhile.

Wang and Vuitton are aesthetic leaders but can be either too taste-specific or too expensive for a lot of people. If you want to embrace the trend but keep your look neutral and classic, opt for something like the Acne Vega Suede Pumps. They’re just as at home in the office as they are punctuating a pair of tights and skinny jeans, and with such a thick heel, you might even want to wear them more often.
