When I woke up on Sunday morning, the first thing I did was check my phone, just like every morning. That includes checking Twitter’s overnight activity, which is particularly interesting when the European fashion weeks are going on – you wake up on the East Coast with several interesting shows just waiting to dazzle you over your morning coffee. (Or, if you’re me, your morning Diet Coke. Yes, I know it’s gross.) This past Sunday, almost all of the Milan Fashion Week tweets were overwhelmed with love for the shoes (and clothes, but mostly shoes) or Fendi Spring 2013.
The collection, the brand’s first in collaboration with footwear wunderkind Nicholas Kirkwood is fresh and very modern and challenging in just the way that it should be. Fendi is great at letting other brands (and its own non-runway line) take on the task of making sexy, crowd-pleasing stilettos and instead producing something interesting and directional. The uppers on some of these shoes are adjustable, meaning that the wearer can make the rise higher or lower, depending on how many panels they use and their own whims for the day. The clear winners, though, are the mirrored patent pairs that ended the show. These shoes aren’t for the casual fashion follower, but if you’re a hardcore design fiend, you’ll probably pick up what Fendi’s putting down. Check out the gallery after the jump.
