Unlike most other shoe designers (except for maybe the best of Christian Louboutin and Charlotte Olympia on a very good day), I feel as though I can sit and look at a pair of Nicholas Kirkwood shoes for hours. Kirkwood’s design work is detailed, modern and, at least to me, utterly fascinating. Even in most of his simplest shoes, he finds a way to take something I expected to see and change it just enough to make me stare.

The Nicholas Kirkwood Floral-Embroidered Mesh Sandals are far and away not Kirkwood’s “simplest” shoe, which is why I love them so much. Embroidery is huge trendy for fall, but believe me when I say that this shoe looks like no other you’re likely to see this season.

The embroidery on this shoe is beautiful, of course, but we all knew it would be. When Kirkwood goes for a treatment like that, he goes whole hog. What I love the most, on the other hand, is the metallic gold trim that runs around the platform, the bottom of the flared heel and the little bow at the back. It’s a completely unnecessary detail, and indeed one that a lesser designer would probably cut in order to keep costs low and expand his or her potential profit margin. Kirkwood always goes that extra mile, though, and you can see it in things like the gold trim on this shoe. Hell, you can see it in the entire design in general. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $1695.

That’s quite a hefty price for grandma shoes.

Beautiful is not the description that I would use….the bow just makes them worse. Not for me….

Not so beautiful in my book….and the bow makes them worse.

I have to say I’m not a big fan of the embroidery but I adore the bows on the heels.
