Children’s stories give us some of our greatest shoe references of all time. The first ones that come to mind are, of course, Cinderella’s glass slipper and Dorothy’s ruby slippers, and I bet you can figure out which one the Jimmy Choo Trust Glitter Pumps borrow from heavily. (Hint: It’s not the glass ones.)
Dorothy’s ruby slippers were shaped differently back then, of course – stilettos weren’t yet the norm in women’s footwear during the Wizard of Oz era – but if the movie were to be remade today, I could see these Choos take a starring role. Better these than the Casadei pole-worker version, after all.
I’m not much of a Choo fan by any stretch of the imagination, but the departure of brand head Tamara Mellon has me newly optimistic about where the shoe giant may be headed. This pair might not be particularly moving, beyond the feel-good movie nostalgia, but it manages to do what few Choos have done for me in the past: get right up to the point of over-embellishment and stop. The glitter and the bright color and the little strap are enough, whereas Choos tend to tack five more things on after “enough” is reached, just not with us much flare and whimsy as Christian Louboutin. These, on the other hand, are keepers. Especially for any Dorothy devotees among us. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $695 via Net-a-Porter.
