Reed Krakoff takes the summer wedge in a modernist direction

Reed Krakoff Wooden Heeled Leather and Python Sandals, $795 via Net-a-Porter
What did I tell you guys? It’s going to be wall-to-wall wood for wedges this summer, and if you don’t like it, too bad. (Ok, there will be other things too. But lots more wood than normal!) We started off classic with a pair of Lanvin wedges, but what if you want to go in a more modern direction with your wooden heels? Well, you can hardly do much better than the Reed Krakoff Wooden Heeled Leather and Python Sandals if clean lines are your preference.
Even though Krakoff’s handbags tend to edge toward the traditional, I’m always impressed by how forward-thinking the company’s shoe designs are. Even though these wedges are about as sleek as a clunky-by-nature shoe gets, they’re still incredibly wearable. The python juxtaposed with the smooth leather gives a textural contrast without incorporating additional colors, and the beige leather and blonde wood make this about as neutral and versatile a summer sandal as you’ll find. I’m sure that the notch in the wood sole was intended to give it a bit of visual lightness, in addition to a few more right angles, but it’s the only thing about the shoe that I still can’t decide if I like. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $795.
