Lanvin Cutout Heel Pumps, $1552 via Nordstrom
Just yesterday morning, I got into a conversation with a friend on Facebook chat about how much we both love Alber Elbaz. He came up because of the recent uptick in speculation about the open spot at Dior, and she and I would both love to see him offered the position. If he can do something as cool as the Lanvin Cutout Heel Pump with Lanvin’s resources, which are somewhat modest resources for a major brand, imagine what he could do at the reigns of one of the most storied couture houses in the world.
There are a lot of very smart things going on with this shoe, but the smartest thing of all is what isn’t going on. Somehow, Elbaz’s team came up with an interesting, eye-catching structural modification that doesn’t make the shoe any less wearable or comfortable than your average pump. When designing a piece like this, the temptation to add just a few more tweaks and details is always present, and sometimes, resisting the temptation is worth it.
And that’s one of Elbaz’s great strengths; there’s never too much. His pieces are never a step too far or a touch too wacky. Restraint can be one of a designer’s greatest virtues, and in the case of Lanvin, it makes for one of the chicest lines in the world. These shoes are just as great at retail as they were on the runway. Buy through Nordstrom for $1552.
