Marni Embellished Suede Platforms, $1160 via Net-a-Porter

I remember my first pair of high heels very clearly. I was 12 years old, and my mother reluctantly bought them for me to go with the black dress I had picked out to wear to a friend’s bat mitzvah. They were Nine West, and the tall, chunky heel seemed like the most sophisticated thing in the world to me. They were black, and the little platform in the front made me feel extra tall.

Thirteen years later, the bat mitzvah friend is now my roommate almost a thousand miles from home in New York City, and the Marni Embellished Suede Platforms remind me a lot of the shoes I wore to her entré to adulthood more than a decade ago. Maybe I should have saved them.

My platforms had simpler straps instead of crystal-encrusted bows, but the overall look was very similar. And that was back in the 90s, so I’m sure that the return of that look makes some of you cringe, but I can’t help but be a little excited. I was too young to wear most of the clothes from movies like Clueless, so I wouldn’t mind a shot at those styles as an adult. Maybe I’ll even pair them with a shoe like this, although for something with such an obvious nostalgia value above all else, I’ll be looking at a lower price point. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $1160.

Thanks for the wicked flashback to middle school. Couldn’t pay me to be 13 again, but you COULD pay me to wear those shoes!

My first heels were chunky with platforms, too. I never really got over that, so I would wear these shoes . . . if they were quite a bit cheaper.

I still own a pair of chunky heels from my college days. I wear them alot more now since chunky heels are back. These Marni’s are really cute, but my legs are too muscular for those now. I walk. Alot.
