Charlotte Olympia’s sophisticated take on colorblocking
by Amanda Mull
Yesterday we discussed the Prada Elastic Stripe Wedges, which everyone seemed to like quite a bit, in a silly, over-the-top sort of way. By comparison, the Charlotte Olympia Colorblock Satin Pumps are a relatively sane take on the same trend.
I’ve always admired Charlotte Olympia designer Charlotte Dellal’s ability to combine a number of colors on a single shoe and consistently make it work, and this is a perfect example of her talent in that arena. These shoes stand out (they’re red, yellow and blue satin – of course they stand out), but they do it in a way that’s still refined and ladylike while still retaining their sexiness.
The structure of these shoes isn’t opening any new design doors, but I love that Dellal took the different physical pieces of the shoe and colorblocked them that way instead of going for an all-over stripe or something similar. Not only does it emphasize the shoe’s components, but it makes a great deal of aesthetic sense, creating a finished product that’s a bright wardrobe addition instead of a fashion oddity.
