My first thought upon seeing the Yves Saint Laurent Baobab Python Wedges? “I sure hope that platform is hollow.” If it is, this is a very cool pair of summer wedges (or almost-wedges – there’s a very small divide between the platform and the heel.) If it’s not, they’re likely a bloody foot waiting to happen – a couple of uber-thin straps isn’t enough to comfortably attach a solid wedge of that size to anyone’s foot, even if you’re something of a professional heel-wearer.

I’m going to embrace optimism and assume that the fine folks at Yves Saint Laurent love us enough to give us a hollow or otherwise lightweight wedge, though, and go forward with my generally positive feelings about this shoe. The flash of orange in the python pattern is a nice touch, as is the amount of snakeskin that the large wedge provides.

Yves Saint Laurent Python Wedge Sandals YSL mixes tiny straps with an enormous wedge

Although the dearth of straps may make the design feel a bit unbalanced, it’s a choice of which I vociferously approve. Adding enough leather above the foot to balance what’s going on below it would lead to a very heavy, covered-up look, which takes the fun out of a summer shoe. This way, your eyes go straight to the sculptural, colorful python wedge, which is exactly how it should be. Unfortunately, my eyes are still stuck on the price tag. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $1995.

i love the straps but whenever i will wear it, i’ll go paranoid coz if ever some little mishap will happen, the teeny straps will just break, big time! i haven’t seen YSL shoes that are really worth buying.. the last ones were the tribs and the tribtoos (which i bought in 3 colors haha).. the only shoe i considered buying was the mohawk in cobalt blue.. other than that, i haven’t really seen anything worthy to be called investment pieces… oh Stefano, please come up with something beautiful and practical for our feet!!!

They even look a bit odd…i mean the thin straps vs the bulk of the wedge. I love the colour but prefer not to walk like the Hulk to try and get those bad boys off the ground using what can best be desribed as bits of dental floss.
