Serious question: Would you make fun of me if I bought these Ash platforms?
by Amanda Mull
Be gentle, you guys. I’m kind of embarrassed.
I spent most of last year grumbling about how much I don’t like clogs, and over the winter, I had some harsh words about the super chunky platforms that started to appear across the footwear landscape. I was resolute in my correctness, just as I was sure that those would be two trends that would never turn me into a believer.
Well, I was wrong. And now I really want to buy the very reasonably priced Ash Vicky Crisscross Clog Sandals, which combine the two trends into one shoe that I might love just a little bit.
I’d like to blame my change in opinion on a salesman at Jeffrey. I had asked to try on a pair of patterned Miu Miu sandals, and when he went to get them, he also brought back a few other pairs he thought I might like. One of them was a Sergio Rossi wedge that I didn’t love at first sight, but my affection grew after walking in it. Not only did the wedges give me extra inches, but they were comfortable. Because they had a platform shaped similarly to these Ash shoes, they provided a boost without putting a ton of pressure on the ball of my foot or forcing me to bend at a severe angle. I was officially in love.
I didn’t buy that pair of shoes, but ever since, I’ve been on the lookout for a neutral, reasonably priced design with a similar shape, and these shoes are it. They’re trendy, comfortable and less than $250, even though they go against everything that I’ve stood for over the past two seasons. My desire for daytime height might overcome my shame. Buy through ShopBop for $225.
