Wear Fall 2011′s trends now with mirrored leather shoes
by Amanda MullUsually by the time that a big trend break industry-wide, a few examples of the idea from forward-thinking designers have already found their way to the market. Designers as diverse as Marc Jacobs and Alexander Wang showed metallic leather shoes on their recent Fall 2011 runways, but if you want to be ahead of the curve, we have three options to get the look now.
Mirrored leather is what happens when you layer a high-gloss patent finish over a leather that’s already metallic, and many of you will probably remember it best from the Louis Vuitton Miroir collection from several years back. The look is back for both shoes and handbags for fall, but it seems to me like shoes are your best bet. Not only do patent shoes stand up to wear and tear better than patent leather, but it makes it easier for the very bold material to be an outfit accent instead of a show-stealing main event.
If you want to go whole-hog into fall’s trends as quickly as possible, the Prada Metallic Platform Mary Janes are the way to do it. Not only do they have a trendy shape and material, but almost all of fall’s best shoes had Mary Jane or ankle straps. This design probably appeals only to people who prefer their accessories with a heavy dose of quirk, but if that’s you, you’re probably already in love. Buy through Saks for $950.
Silver and gold are colors that we see often in fashion, but bronze comes by somewhat less often. If you like it, you’ll want to be sure to jump on the Brian Atwood Maniac Metallic Leather Pumps. The classic shape helps to tone down the overall look of the shoe just a bit, but with that much mirrored leather, “just a bit” doesn’t make much difference in the bold result. Buy through Net-a-Porter for $595.
In an odd way, the Giuseppe Zanotti Mirror Cuff Sandals may be the most wearable of any of these shoes. Sexy summer sandals bring with them an expectation of flash and glitz, and the strappy shape means that the amount of mirrored leather isn’t overpowering. With the right kind of lifestyle, these could even become something of a wardrobe staple. And if you have that kind of lifestyle, would you like to adopt a 25-year-old blogger? I don’t take up much room or make much noise… Buy through ShopBop for $895.
