Giant platforms shall be inescapable for spring
by Amanda MullWhen I gave a pair of clodhopping Yves Saint Laurent platforms a middling-at-best review back in October, it didn’t occur to me that that pair of shoes was merely the first in a veritable parade of 60s silliness that would be headed our way for spring. Sadly, that appears to be the case.
With shoes like the Christian Louboutin Patent and Cork Platforms, Giuseppe Zanotti Wood Clog Platforms and the Prada Multi-Strap Cutout Wedges all hitting retailers over the past two weeks, it looks as though we have a bonafide trend on our hands. Ugh.
The sleek and slightly redeeming Zanotti sandals notwithstanding, this is a trend that I will allow to pass right by me with nary a second thought or lustful glance. The Louboutin’s cork is too kitschy and over-pronounced to be chic, and the end result is a shoe that will make almost anyone look like she’s headed to a bad theme party, and Prada’s canvas-covered platform isn’t all that much better. Generally I would expect to see more from these two designers, so I hope that they recover from these transgressions quickly. As far as the Zanotti goes, he should probably be given some credit for taking a bad trend and making it slightly more attractive.
Buy the Louboutins through Neiman Marcus for $595.
Buy the Zanottis through Saks for $750.
Buy the Pradas trough Neiman Marcus for $895.
