I can think of no more precarious shoe material that white suede or nubuck. The soft, napped finish of both materials is notorious for its easy ruination at the hands of dirt, grime and moisture, and making either material stark white feels like tempting fate in the worst way. And still, I find myself overwhelmingly attracted to the Giuseppe Zanotti Tapered Toe Pumps.
In this case, I think that the white color is key to the minimal, sleek effect of the design. This shoe’s lines are back-breakingly precise, and a similarly stark color choice helps to highlight the care that went into crafting this prototypical pump. But still, white nubuck? I don’t know what I’m supposed to do with that.
The more I look at this design, the more it reminds me of a Barbie shoe, but in a good way. The shape and feel are timeless, and it’s the kind of shoe that I thought I would grow up to wear when I was a child playing dress-up. White heels always have a vaguely naughty-nurse feel to me, but if ever a pair could pull off the look without looking silly or fetishistic, it’s these. Now I just have to figure out how to keep white nubuck clean. Buy through ShopBop for $550.
