What shoes do you wear to the airport?

by

Burberry Biker Platform Ankle Boots 147x200 What shoes do you wear to the airport? On the way back from a recent trip to New York City, I waited at LaGuardia for my flight home to Atlanta next to a woman wearing the Burberry Platform Biker Boots that I love so much. After I forced myself to stop staring at her in unmitigated shoe-envy and restrained myself from tapping her on the shoulder to talk about her boots, I remembered that I was sitting in an airport, waiting to board a plane to yet another airport, one which is so big that I’ve nearly missed flights out of Atlanta because it takes so long to hoof it from security to your freaking gate, which is always the last one on the concourse, always. Wearing heels in that situation struck me as brave, to say the least.

And then I looked down at my own feet, shod in Havaianas flip flops for convenience and ease of security screening, and I wondered if maybe I was the crazy person after all. And then last week, watching four cast members of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills hike through LAX atop towering platform stilettos made me wonder – what shoes do tried-and-true shoe lovers wear to travel? A chic flat? Anything that can be taken on and off easily? Or do you go all-out and wear whatever shoe strikes you as the most fabulous in your collection that day? This Burberry boot, of course, can be purchased for $1095 via Neiman Marcus.

My airport attire is usually inversely proportional to the cuteness of guy sitting next to me on plane and the gate number. If i look like i got dragged through a hedge backwards (trainers, jogging pants, cardie with questionable dog hair stuck to it) I will be sitting next to Brad Pitt and i will be at gate no 1 right by check in. If im wearing a pair of CL towering painful heels, nice make up, cool jeans and heavy Birkin my gate number will be 999 and i will be sitting next to someone who looks like my old Physics professor.

    UGGS!!!

(and makeup. i don’t care what the hell you have on, always have your makeup set when you’re in the airport)

I generally have on heels (or boots in the winter), partly to look nice and partly because they take up so much valuable packing space in my suitcase that I’d rather wear them and pack another couple shirts, etc… I do try to pick the pair (of those coming with me) that are the easiest to slip on and off.
I’m so paranoid about being late that I usually get to the airport in plenty of time to walk slowly to the farthest possible gate (I have the same feeling about that being inevitable as you do, Amanda) so having heels on isn’t usually too much of a problem.

I always wear heels to the airport – my Louboutin Botta boots are usually my go to because I think that knee high boots are very effortlessly chic; I also wear my YSL Tribtoos quite frequently. I usually pair my footwear with leggings, a loose fitting (still chic), off the shoulder top and a Birkin. Lastly, I am a firm believer that oversized sunglasses are a must for travel! Just because you’re traveling doesn’t mean you have to “slum it.”

I used to do sandals because of airport security, but then my philosophy switched to my boots if I happen to be packing them during the winter. Like someone metnioend above, it takes up valuable packing space. So, lately, been wearing my Cognac Coach riding boots, and i’ll pack slippers in the bag to switch into during the flight.

Flats. I have a six year old son which needs my help as well as a slow as molasses 12 year old son. They will be wearing vans on our next trip. Since I’m married, I’m not really interested in impressing any man.

      Chucks or flats.

Flats, sneakers, or boots. Pretty much what I normally wear. The airport isn’t a place that I relax on style…I just dress like I always do.

I travel a lot and my go-to airport shoes are either Jeffrey Campbell cowboy-esque booties, or high-heel boots or wedges – in other words, anything over three inches! I draw the line at evening shoes or stilettos, though.

Uggs or flats, depending on the time of year, usually with Juicy sweats and a random hoodie. I really don’t care about what I look like there, if I’m going to be sitting for hours I want to be comfortable.

Flats, preferably both comfortable (as I have 2 small kids) and pretty. Never Flip Flops.

Uggs for winter, ballerina flats for summer. As much as I’d like to make an effort, the hassle of security at the airport just doesn’t make it worth it, so something comfie and easy to remove is always a bonus. :)

Uggs never ever helped anyone get an upgrade (my trusted orange lizard Tod’s worked their magic a few times). For short flights however I make no exceptions – business suit + Jimmy Choos.

And since we are on the airport topic – yesterday I had time on my hands in Vienna airport – I got my husband a lovely Hermes tie, sighed at bags and the other Hermes goodies thinking that I will need an even bigger promotion to justify the purchase of a Hermes bag. My mood picked up instantly when I spotted the sale sign in the Feragamo shop so … 2 pairs of shoes later I was on a veritable high, only to get abruptly into shock when I saw that the sales lady had a lovely grey Hermes bag. With disbelief I asked her if she got a nice deal from the shop next door; cool as a cucumber she replied “No, I had to have it ordered in Moscow, they have such a limited range here in Vienna” . Shocker !!!! I have to ask: how come an airport sales girl carry a coveted, made to order Birkin ????

It depends on where I’m going, time of day, and who I’ll be meeting. I try to always wear shoes that are easy to take on and off for security. But I never wear sandals because my feet always get cold on the plane. I think a flat- mid heel biker bootie is a perfect all around airport boot.

Ditto on the easy to take on an off for security. Chanel or LV flats or Tods are always my airport shoes. They are functional and don’t look pedestrian and if someone rushes past me I won’t fall over. Saw that happen once to a woman in J Choos, ouch.

    Love the biker bootie though.

To all the women who said they wear heels, I feel bad for you. The trip to the airport is already miserably why put your body and feet through even more !! I am a sneakers, Uggs, or Havaianas girl when it comes to airports !!

I think it depends on where you’re flying to (climate) and how long the flight is going to take. I definitely wear heels on short flights and comfy sneakers or boots on international flights.
