Functional duality is a difficult thing to create in any sector of fashion, but it’s particularly hard when designing an object that requires as much structural integrity as a shoe. Few shoemakers try it, and even fewer do it well. Most of those who do are high-concept brands whose wares aren’t necessarily meant for mass retail consumption or day-to-day use, which makes it even more impressive that the Loeffler Randall Mallory Metal Tip Zip-Off Boot exists.

Usually when one thing can successfully serve two purposes, one of those purposes suffers to some extent. Surprisingly, that doesn’t appear to be the case with these boots. Both the full shaft and ankle boot versions are well-cut and sleek, and the preponderance of zipper embellishments in recent fall looks ensures that the mechanism for changing the boot from one shape to the other doesn’t look too out-of-place. The metal toe plate is a nice touch, and the overall effect is modern and wearable, not to mention versatile and reasonably priced. Buy through Neiman Marcus for $895.

How clever! Love the shapes and minimal detailing.

Love the toes, but not into the two in one deal. Could be a much cuter ankle boot.

They remind me too much of those guys cargo pants with the zip-off legs from the early 2000s.

Beautiful pair of boots. However, the money would be wasted since I would only wear them as an ankle boot.
