Like him or not, Alexander Wang has a knack for certain things. Throwing parties (Nicki Minaj performed at his fashion week fete last week), selling black clothing and predicting hot shoe shapes are among them, even if Alexander Wang’s Spring 2014 shoes look a little prohibitive now. Graphic white Mary Janes with thick rubber soles? You betcha.
The light color and pointed toes of Wang’s runway shoes are right on top of several ongoing trends from the past year, so it’s the in-your-face scale of these kicks that really makes news. Out are the delicate heels and cutouts of Wang’s last collection and in are githy, solid-color soles in both tall and more modest heights. We can dismiss the mules from the collection, I think (customers seem completely uninterested in backless shoes while designers attempt impotently to make “fetch” happen), and focus on the pumps, which are growing on me more the longer I look at them. I’ve always loved a thick heel, and the shoes have a lovely sense of minimalism to them. Alexander Wang’s usual customers will no doubt be pleased.
