Before I moved to New York City two years ago, it had never occurred to me that there would be a period of time during legitimate spring (not “spring” in early March, when it’s actually still winter but we’re all sick of admitting that to ourselves) when it wouldn’t be appropriate to wear sandals. Look back, there are really only two seasons in Atlanta (Hot and Not Hot), and by Easter, if not well before, I always found myself scurrying about in sandals. In New York, it’s well into mid April and I’m currently wearing boots. Looking back, all those spring flats that I saw in stores and totally overlooked make so much sense now.
Naturally, I’m now totally obsessed with these footwear options that I ignored for so long, and I’ve been trying to pick a pair for myself for days. If you’re having similar thoughts (and if you’ve made it this far through tales of my childhood, you probably are), then I’d suggest you go for a loafer or smoking flat – they’re the coolest thing going in flats, of course, but they also look particularly great with the skinny, slightly cropped pants that spring brings to stores everywhere. (I also didn’t understand why people needed spring pants and jackets until two years ago. Go figure.) Below, I’ve rounded up the best options that these here Internets have to offer.
